Energy firm will be open and transparent

SIR, — I refer to the letter headlined 'This windfarm exhibition begged more questions than it answered ('Herald', July 31).
We are still in the early stages of consultation — a process by which the public's input on how our proposals might affect them is being sought. We do understand that there is some local unease about developments of this nature and learning about this and addressing what we can is why we start the consultation process as early as we do.
I am sorry that your correspondent doubted some of the information we gave at the consultation day.
Just to clarify, it has been confirmed in the Sustainable Development Commission's Wind Power in the UK report, that in this country 79 percent of residents support wind farms.
Statistics in the report also show that support for a wind farm, from those living within a 5km radius of a development, actually increases once the site has been approved for construction and is up and running.
It is also important to stress that your correspondent's view about the proposed turbines being bigger than any structure outside London is misleading.
I would urge residents with any questions on technical matters to contact us directly so as to avoid the publishing of inaccurate or speculative information. If we deal with the facts we are less likely to worry people unnecessarily.
At present, we are still exploring options and we are listening to the views of residents and other consultees. Clearly we have nothing to hide as was suggested.
More detail will follow, after further consultation, and we will share our findings in an open and transparent way.
We will keep in touch with residents and are planning further consultation days over the coming months.
We would like to thank the people we met for their enthusiasm and constructive feedback.
