How will local views be sought?

SIR, — The articles in last week's issue of the 'Herald' illustrate the problems as we prepare for the new Unitary Council on April 1.
The most interesting comment is from Coun Reid when he states that the Council must listen and understand what local people are saying.
My immediate response is to ask how and when the new Administration plans to discover the thoughts of residents. I am not aware of any meetings or literature explaining the current proposals.
It seems to me that the basic need is a seamless transfer of all the frontline services, by the appointment of a manager for each area to implement this vital role.
Surely it is sensible to seek agreement to preserve the current areas for the immediate future and not try to put in place vast Area Committees to make decisions on 'planning and licensing'.
In the next five years it should be possible to adjust some boundaries and establish local structures, but these will develop as Town and Parish Councils understand their new roles.
