SIR, — So there we were. It was the River Wansbeck and a young family was at the landing stage, ready to throw the contents of a bag into the water.
Close by were Mummy, Daddy and Baby, who already dwarfs the rest of the local feathered life. They were determined they were going to get the lion's — or should that be swan's — share of the bread.

Surrounding the swans were numerous ducks and drakes, who seemed far from happy.

A cleaned up version of what they were saying seemed to be: 'Go away. This isn't fair. This is our bread. We've been here for decades. You're newcomers.'

This also seems to be an accurate refection of much of what passes for political debate in these parts.
