SIR, — There has, for many years, been a serious problem with road traffic flow from Stobhill towards Morpeth and the A1, and I feel the introduction of either or both of the proposed new supermarkets might well worsen that situation.
A significant proportion of that northbound traffic is in reality southbound, having of necessity to crawl from Stobhill to the Mafeking roundabout in order to turn southward.

But I recall that when the Stobhill Farm housing estate was planned som
e years ago, part of the planning consideration was the provision of a road link from Stobhill roundabout westward to the A1 by underpassing the main railway line.

The housing estate was built, as was the approach road from the roundabout into the estate, plus a short extension towards the railway. But that is where it stopped and remains today, for reasons understood locally as having been to do with the financing and practicality of a railway underpass at that time.

I wonder whether such consideration might be re-opened, perhaps to the point of making it part of any planning approval for the proposed supermarket projects?

It would certainly provide a long overdue traffic route to the the A1 and the West, and might thereby ease the existing Stobhill traffic flow problem.
