We must make unitary work

SIR, — Well, the people of Northumberland have spoken, and very decisively indeed, about just one Unitary Northumberland Authority.
The architects of this ill-conceived and unwanted change have been wiped away, either defeated at the polls or, in many instances, dumped by their own Party. But we are stuck with the one Unitary — there is no going back.

As Liberal Democrats we have taken the view that we didn't like it but we must make it work in the interests of every Northumberland resident.

As the largest Party now in Northumberland the 26 Liberal Democrats will work hard to achieve the primary objective of delivering transition effectively by April 1, next year. We will aim to do that by consensus with other Parties and individuals, but we will not be deflected from that key task by petty politics. We do not underestimate the difficulties that lie ahead of us.

Morpeth residents gave an overwhelming endorsement to the local Liberal Democrats by electing Ian Lindley, David Moore, and David Woodard along with myself to the new authority, and in the process, helping to make Castle Morpeth a 'Labour-free area' for the first time since Castle Morpeth was formed in 1974.

On behalf of all four of us, and James Grant who narrowly lost Ulgham, we thank all those who voted for us, and give the on-going commitment that we will help any resident with issues, continue to keep people informed through our regular Focus leaflets, and go on listening to and responding to our local communities. I know all of us picked up lots of issues to address whilst we were canvassing and those matters will be addressed as quickly as possible.

Finally perhaps the leaders of the current Castle Morpeth Administration will reflect on how they justify continuing to exclude the Liberal Democrat Borough councillors from legitimately voicing the views of Morpeth residents in a wider coalition?
