MESSING about on the river will be made easier in Morpeth with the launch of a kayak club.
Castle Morpeth Council's Leisure and Culture Department is hoping to set up the group following rising demand for its kayaking Summer classes.

The authority has been running the scheme for the past few years, but due to its limited scope there have been long waiting lists and large numbers of youngsters have missed out.

A lack of similar clubs nearby has also meant that those lucky enough to have enjoyed a session have found it difficult to continue the sport.

Now the Council's Active Outdoors team is working to find funding for the club's opening costs and equipment to ensure kayak novices do not have to buy their own kit.

Co-ordinator Louise Horsley said: "The club will be aimed at all members of the community and all levels of ability, from juniors to adults, schools and local youth groups and those with disabilities.

"Current kayakers are welcome to join and in particular those with an interest in coaching."

An Annual General Meeting for the club will take place at Longhirst Hall on Monday, January 14 at 6pm.

The session will give people the chance to find out more about the idea, elect members and sign up. Volunteers will be encouraged to get involved as the Council hopes to hand the club over to the community to run.
