Gutsy Pont swim squad

PONTELAND Amateur Swimming Club's Diddy squad punched above their weight to finish second in their league final.
Coach John Nicholson, Team Manager Helen Mason, three parent helpers, the boy's team captain and 41 swimmers left Ponteland for Felling Pool on Sunday ready to commence battle in the Durham and District Junior League Division II final gala.

The at
mosphere was electric, with plenty of noise from the 300-plus spectators, and after 30 of the 52 events Ponteland were in joint third in the contest against City of Sunderland, Consett, Wear Valley, South Tyneside and Tynedale.

But some great and gutsy performances meant that after a tiring and nail biting 90 minutes, Ponteland finished a fantastic second, with only the much larger City of Sunderland Swimming Club ahead of them.

The Junior League, which has three divisions, is for swimmers between nine and 12 years of age and teams come from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Cleveland.

During March and April, Ponteland competed in three first round galas. They came second at the first gala, third at the second gala and second in the third gala to qualify for the final.

The performances are all the more impressive as this was their first season in Division II after achieving promotion to it last year.
