Water sport club enjoys overwhelming start

A NEW water sports club is flushed with success after enjoying a surge in interest.
The Morpeth Paddlesport Club was officially launched by HMS Northumberland Commander Martin Simpson two months ago when members pitted their skills against the Royal Navy crew.
The event attracted dozens of spectators and when the four kayak coaches launched their first sessions on the River Wansbeck last week they were deluged with eager participants.
The two courses were fully booked, with 46 new starters wanting to get out on the water, including 13 adults.
Now the club is fully subscribed, but due to the high demand for the activity, further sessions will be launched.
Castle Morpeth Council Sports Development Officer Louise Horsley said: "The first session was great fun and although we're full at the moment, there will be new sessions starting over the Summer.
"Anyone who's interested should pop along to have a look, a chat and see what's involved — if you're aged eight or over it would be great to see you."
The club was established by the Council's Leisure and Culture team as part of its Active Outdoors programme after a successful Summer kayaking course failed to meet demand.
Dozens of children were missing out and for those who had been lucky enough to try the sport there was nothing available afterwards for them to continue it.
Volunteers will be asked to lead the organisation and train as coaches to ensure its sustainability.
The club meets every Monday evening at the rowing boat jetty in Carlisle Park and accommodates people of all abilities.
For more information, people can go along to a session, or telephone Louise Horsley or Andrew Tunnah on 01670 535000.
