Morpeth 31 Medicals 11 Durham and Northumberland, Division One
Morpeth continued their winning ways with what was in the end a comfortable victory against an enterprising Medicals side in an entertaining encounter.
The win also came with a bonus point to ensure a maximum return so far this season.
It was captain and hooker Hill who stole the headlines with a hat-trick of tries, which summed up his more than lively display. The points tally was assisted by an immaculate kicking display by fly-half Birch.
The home side got off to the perfect start when second row Michie, a real find this season with his athletic ball handling ability, went over from an attacking line-out. Birch kicked over the conversion.
Then Hill started his scoring spree by forcing over from close range from a tapped penalty move. Once again, Birch added the extras.
Medicals consistently provided good running rugby and they dominated possession for a spell. They were rewarded with two successful penalties to make the half time score 14-6.
But when the visitors missed a fairly comfortable penalty, Morpeth restored their domination and 10 minutes into the second half it was Hill again going over, not surprisingly from close range, with Birch adding the conversion (21-6).
The double act were again on the mark with 10 minutes remaining to get the bonus point and Birch’s tally for the game went up to 11 when he kicked over a penalty.
Medicals, to their credit, had the final say with an unconverted try in the last play of the game.
All credit to the home side for continuing their 100 per cent start to the season and it was a great day for the club as a whole on Saturday. All the senior teams won and the Colts were also victorious.
