Another league loss for injury-hit Pont side

Ponteland 6 Horden 33 Durham and Northumberland, Division One

PONTELAND’S difficult season continued with a defeat against high-flying Horden.

The visitors got off to a good start with a converted try inside 10 minutes. Forward Forbes made a blindside break from a scrum to be pulled down 10 metres out.

Quick recycling allowed Bains to feed Heckles, who hit a great line to slice through the defence and go under the posts.

Another break forward saw the ball moved wide to Stables. The young winger rounded two defenders and raced 30 metres and looked to be heading for a score, only for a great covering Pont tackle to bring him down just short.

But the supporting Thirkell picked up and crashed over.

Horden’s next try came from a break which worked the ball to Smith. The centre took play to within five metres before being tackled, Forbes picking up to score.

As the second and third tries were converted, the hosts were 0-21 down.

Despite suffering some more injuries, Ponteland did not let their heads drop and they managed to exert some attacking pressure. This was rewarded with two successful penalties from Will Newbigin either side of half-time.

The gap could have been reduced further, but the opportunity in the Horden 22 was stopped by a decent cover tackle.

And the away side then scored an unconverted try when they drove the ball forward before moving possession to the blindside for Jones to go over in the corner.

Soon afterwards, Jones outpaced the defence to touch down for a second time and this score was converted to make it 6-33 at full-time.
