Morpeth 40 Team Northumbria 17 North One East

MORPETH continued their excellent start to the season with a comfortable win against the Newcastle-based student side, writes Tom Green.

It was comfortable in the end, with the additional bonus point a more-than-useful return, but it came at a cost, with both flanker Defty and centre Mooney picking up injuries.

The home side went in front after five minutes when from an attacking line-out, Bell muscled over from a driving maul.

Jinks then increased the lead with a further penalty to make the score 8-0 after 15 minutes.

Team Northumbria posed a threat in the first half and they hit back strongly with two converted tries, although it must be said these were aided by some poor defending.

Morpeth then created a great deal of pressure and an excellent Hornby kick led to another attacking line-out with skipper Forsythe, again outstanding, crashing over for a try.

This was converted by Jinks and he later kicked over a penalty to give the hosts an 18-14 half-time lead.

Morpeth made the first crucial second-half score when Simms broke through, allowing Watson to go over in the corner. The visitors got back into the game when they converted a penalty.

But this was cancelled out by a Jinks penalty and then an excellent Richie Stephenson try when he took the attack on from fly-half Hornby to secure the win.

Jinks converted that and then ended the scoring with a further conversion from a Bell try, after good work from prop Campbell and an Allen break. The late flurry of points made the final score 40-17.
