Ponteland 6 Guisborough 17 Durham and Northumberland Division One
PONTELAND’S injuries caught up with them as they fell to their first defeat in seven games.
The visitors took the lead with an unconverted try before Pont’s number eight Michael Burn dislocated his knee and the match was held up for 45 minutes as an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.
Guisborough went further ahead with a converted score, but the home side did come back into it with two Michael Mullins penalties (6-12).
As the match progressed, both sides had scoring opportunities but it was the Teesside team that touched down again. Ponteland were camped out on their opponents’ line in the last 15 minutes but they could not find a way through.
Director of Rugby John Chappell said: “As well as losing Michael Burn, three of our guys were playing on with injuries in the second half and this was partly the reason why we couldn’t turn the game around.
“But this was our first defeat in seven and our recent good form means we should be safe from relegation – Ashington would have to go on an amazing run to catch us.
“The upturn in form was sparked by the arrival of two new players, who also inspired the rest of the squad to up their game. Unfortunately, the duo are among our injury list.
“We have two games left and whatever team we put out, we’ll still be looking for two good performances.”
