MORPETH Town are fully prepared for the challenges of Northern League Division One football after a successful training camp abroad.
The Highway Men go into this weekend’s season opener on the back of a good workout at the Amendoeira Sports Club in the Algarve, Portugal. It is a venue that has been used by the likes of Ajax, Dynamo Kiev, Hertha Berlin, Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Sunderland. The facilities available to Morpeth certainly paid off as they defeated local Algarve League side Guia FC 12-0.
The other highlight of an intense pre-season was the Highway Men’s 4-1 victory away at Evostick Premier League side Blyth Spartans.
Town’s high tempo passing game was too much for their higher ranked opponents as goals from Taylor (two), Anderson and Hutchison gave them an emphatic and fully-deserved victory.
Morpeth commence their Ebac Northern League Division One campaign away to highly fancied Marske United on Saturday.
Their first home league game of the season is against Cumbrian outfit Penrith on Wednesday. Kick-off at Craik Park is 7.30pm.
The Highway Men are then at home to North East Counties side Liversedge in the FA Cup on Saturday, August 17.
Admission to all league games will be the same as last season – £4 for adults and £2 for OAPs, students and under 16s.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Northern League, all junior members and coaches of Morpeth Sporting Club, Morpeth Rugby Club, Morpeth Harriers, Morpeth Cricket Club, Morpeth Hockey Club and Morpeth Tennis Club will on production of club accreditation be admitted free of charge, as will all the under 16s who take part in the half-time penalty shoot-out competition.
