Morpeth Town 4 Guisborough Town 3 Ebac Northern League, Division One
Morpeth continued their recent run of good form when they ended Guisborough Town’s title challenge in a seven-goal thriller.
The visitors started strongly. Karl Dryden beat away a fierce shot from Earl and Bathwater looked to have opened the scoring when he rounded Dryden, but Michael Hall was on hand to clear off the line.
The Highway Men started to come into the game and an effort from Daniel Taggert went narrowly wide.
On the half-hour, Ben Sayer dribbled through the Guisborough defence and when his shot cannoned off a post, Taggert put the rebound into the net from close range. Two minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead when captain Chris Jewels headed home from a Sayer corner.
The Highway Men forced another corner which Jewels headed back across goal to Hall, who powered the ball home to put Morpeth 3-0 up.
In the final minute of the first half, Bathwater earned a fortuitous penalty which Earl dispatched.
Three minutes into the second half, Martin pulled another back direct from a corner. Then a loose ball dropped into the box and McPhillips rifled the ball home to equalise.
Undeterred, Morpeth took the game to their opponents in the closing stages. Sean Taylor had a shot well saved by Livesedge, but, from the resulting corner Jewels thundered home the winner.
Afterwards, manager Nick Gray said: “It was a very entertaining game. We got our noses in front and at 3-0 we looked comfortable, until the referee gave an awful penalty decision which changed the game.
“We conceded two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but we showed great character to go on and get the winner. Six months ago we would have lost that game.”
