Baptists get holy trinity in Chapel clash

Saint Aidan’s Chapel Castington 0 Morpeth Baptist Church 3 North East Christian Fellowship, Premier Division

MORPETH gained their first win of the season with a dominant display.

The visitors started strongly, quickly getting the ball under control and playing the pass and move game that is most effective.

Garbutt and Johnson were influential in midfield and a number of chances were created. Lavender hit the crossbar, but a series of corners and shots failed to generate an opening goal.

A further chance was squandered when a penalty kick was awarded after a foul on Johnson, but Lavender screwed the spot kick wide of the left-hand post.

He soon made amends as from a free-kick just inside the opposition half, Brown launched an excellent ball into the box that was knocked on by Chambers and fired into the corner of the net by the striker.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic and Appleby did well to tip over a dipping shot but MBC were the stronger team and went into half-time 1-0 up.

The second period saw more of the same with good work on both flanks by the wingers and full-backs.

Fletcher combined well with Bird down the left, and from one great run he cut in only to fire his shot straight at the keeper. Elliott and Carmichael were also combining well down the right.

Lavender scored his, and the team’s, second after excellent work by Johnson in the left of the box. His pass across the goal was tucked away well by the centre forward.

The win was secured when Chambers, who had battled well throughout the match, nodded in an excellent cross from Lavender at the back post.

After conceding five goals the week before the defence were strong and solid throughout — well directed by the vocal Dewhirst and captain Brown — and deserved the clean sheet.

Substitutes Quincey, Snowball and Haxell came on for a late run out and all got involved.

Man-of-the-match Lavender missed out on the opportunity for another hat-trick as he tried an overhead kick late on, and in virtually the last move of the match was given offside as MBC launched a three on one counter-attack against the tiring home team.
