North Shields Athletic 4 Ponteland United 2 Northern Alliance, Division One
PONTELAND United returned to league action to meet current division leaders North Shields Athletic full of confidence after advancing into the third round of the League Cup.
But they soon fell behind on Saturday when Potts mistimed his challenge and the referee pointed to the spot.
Keith scored the penalty to put the home side in front (1-0).
The visitors were struggling against the quick play of Shields and keeper Rankin was brought into action, diving low down to save a shot which ended a good move by the confident hosts.
Ponteland then started to force themselves more into the game.
On 15 minutes, Cook turned in a cross which was just too far ahead of Anderson and then another cross this time from Rae was finger tipped away for a corner by home keeper Thomas.
On 35 minutes, Shields increased their lead when Pont failed to head clear a corner and the ball was scrambled in with the final touch off Keith’s head (2-0).
Cook missed a great chance to get a goal back when his shot from inside the box skied over the bar and North Shields made it 3-0 when Climpson shot into an empty net following a defensive mix-up.
The hard-working Anderson scored for Ponteland when he got into a good position and curled the ball into the net (3-1).
Team-mate Collins, through strength and tenacity, forced his way through the home side’s rearguard to side-foot past Thomas.
But in-between these goals, Shields substitute Jasper finished off a good move and so the final score was 4-2.
