Red House Farm 4 Ponteland United 0 Northern Alliance, Division One

PONTELAND United visited newly-promoted Red House Farm in what was both teams’ first fixture in this division.

It was hardly a new team that started for Pont with seven of last season’s regulars kicking off the new season. On a bumpy pitch it was the promoted side who started the better and were picking up the loose balls.

But the visitors came closest on 20 minutes when Cook headed the ball back to Holden whose shot on the turn hit the post and rather than going in the ball ran across the goal and away for a goal kick.

The all-important breakthrough came after 30 minutes and it was the home side who got themselves in front. A corner from the left was punched well clear by Blair but the ball fell to Brady who finding himself in space took his time and calmly chipped the ball into the top corner.

Pont nearly equalised from a long shot by Rae which clipped the crossbar but sailed over, allowing Red House Farm to finish the half 1-0 ahead.

On 60 minutes, the hosts increased their lead when Pont gave away a needless penalty and Soulsby drilled the spot-kick low to the keeper’s right. Visibly drained from the setback Pont tried to take the game to Red House but didn’t have enough possession in midfield to create any worthwhile chances.

With10 minutes remaining, they were caught dangling on the ball which caused them to give away a free kick some 25 yards from goal and Brady rifled the ball into the far corner of the net.

At the death Blair pulled off a good save falling backwards to turn a deflected shot from Graham over the bar and with almost the last kick of the match, Hallis drove firmly into the bottom corner after further good work from the outstanding Graham to make it 4-0.

• Ellington Juniors under 13s are currently looking for a goalkeeper to complete the squad, which trains on Thursday nights at People’s Park in Ashington from 6pm.
