Good start for Daniel

Morpeth Town 4 Alnwick Town 0

Morpeth commenced their pre-season preparations with a comfortable victory over Division Two side Alnwick on Saturday.

With the exception of Scott Swanson, who has moved on to Crook Town, all of last season’s successful squad have re-signed for the forthcoming campaign and manager Nick Gray has been busy strengthening his team during the close season.

Daniel Taggart, a strong running skilful forward, has joined the club from Birtley Town. Former Newcastle United youth player Matthew Grieve, a commanding centre half, has signed from last season’s league runners-up Celtic Nation and he is joined in defence by his former Ashington colleague Karl Dryden – an imposing shot stopper who is acknowledged as one top goalkeepers in the Northern League.

The Highway Men started the game strongly and it took Taggart only four minutes to open his account for his new club. Sean Taylor then doubled the lead with a trademark free kick from 30 yards out.

Just before half time, Steven Anderson was fouled in the penalty area and he converted the resulting spot kick to make the half time score 3-0.

Jordan Fry completed the scoring ten minutes from time to give Morpeth a winning start to the campaign. Their next pre-season fixture is away to Shankhouse on Saturday.
