Bay Plastics Challenge Cup final

Wallington will be aiming to put aside their disappointing 2014 as they go in search of cup glory at Woodhorn Lane this evening.

Northern Alliance Premier League leaders Walker Central stand in their way as they aim to secure the first part of a desired double and with it inflict a third straight defeat upon Steva Cowan’s men. Walker recorded two narrow 2-1 victories in the league and tonight’s game at Ashington FC’s Woodhorn Lane (7pm kick-off) is expected to be equally as tight.

The game carries extra significance for Cowan, who will lead his beloved Wallington into a final for the last time before he steps down as manager at the end of the campaign. Cowan has been involved with Wallington for over 30 years as a player, captain and then manager.

It will also be the final showpiece event for club stalwart Trevor Baston, who after almost 18 years is retiring at the end of the season.

Since the 2-1 semi-final victory at the start of the year, The Greens have struggled, going out on penalties in the County Cup and losing five straight league games.

In context though, after gaining promotion to the Premier Division last year, the team have comfortably avoided relegation and tonight have the chance to make the season one to remember.
