Morpeth Town 5 Billingham Synthonia 2 Ebac Northern League, Division One
MORPETH achieved their first league win of the season on Saturday with a five-star performance.
From the kick-off, the hosts took the game to their opponents and after just two minutes, Taylor ran onto Hiftle’s throughball and calmly finished to give his side the lead.
Continuing to press forward, Town had the Billingham defence under constant pressure and Taylor’s skilful chip created an opening for Chilton, who scored from close range to make it 2-0.
In a rare Synthonia attack, the Highway Men were penalised for handball in the box and Magowen converted from the penalty spot.
Undeterred, Morpeth soon regained their two-goal advantage as on 23 minutes. Grant played the ball through to Anderson and he chipped Griffiths in the Billingham goal.
With ten minutes remaining in the half, Anderson ran onto Rookes’ long clearance to make it 4-1.
Just after the hour, Porritt pulled another one back for the Synners, but with ten minutes remaining Chilton headed home Anderson’s cross to complete the scoring and give the Highway Men a comprehensive victory.
Morpeth line-up: Rookes, Hiftle, Robinson, Grant (Dunn), Hall, Jewels, Bell (Patterson), Keenan (Fry), Anderson, Chilton, Taylor.
Last midweek, Town picked up their first point of the league campaign with a 1-1 draw at Newton Aycliffe.
The Highway Men defended very well, with the imperious centre-half combination of Hall and Jewels never missing a tackle, while full-back pairing Robinson and Wilson nullified any threat down the flanks.
On 55 minutes, the home forwards finally found some space in the Morpeth box and Owens forced the ball home from a tight angle.
But Morpeth started to assert themselves as an attacking force and equalised ten minutes from time when Swanston coolly finished from five yards after connecting with Hutchinson’s pin-point cross.
