Morpeth Town 0 Whickham 0 Ebac Northern League Division Two
THE Highway Men turned in a fine display of fluid attacking football on Saturday, but were denied all three points by a goalkeeping display of Jan Tomaszewski proportions by Scott Cresswell in the Whickham goal.
Diving to his left and right time and again, Cresswell thwarted wave upon wave of Morpeth attacks and when he was beaten by an Anderson drive from the edge of the box, the ball crashed back off the far post.
With Anderson, Chilton, McAlpine and Fry all going close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, Town started the second period in determined fashion.
Grant, Dines and Fry controlled possession in midfield and set about carving out more goal-scoring opportunities for the home side’s forwards.
Shots by Chilton were diverted wide by the impressive Cresswell for a succession of corners. A fierce 35-yard drive by Grant was tipped over the bar and from the resulting corner the Whickham keeper made a brave double save, diving at the feet of Chilton to smother the ball.
As the game entered its final minutes, McAlpine bent a 25-yard free-kick round the Whickham wall and as it arrowed towards the top right hand corner of the net the ever agile Cresswell clawed the ball to safety.
On another day Morpeth would have secured a handsome victory but the exceptional Cresswell eared his side a point.
Town travel to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion on Saturday.
On Saturday, October 6, they will take on Chester-le-Street at home.
