THE Lions entered Sunday’s fixture with the enviable statistic of not having conceded a goal for over 120 minutes of football, but faced a stern test against a very good North Shields side.

Morpeth started with the same formation which had served them so well in the previous two games with Brown, Campbell, Bowden and J Thompson forming a strong back line in front of Magneron in goal and Hill in his defensive midfield role.

The game started at a pace in overcast conditions and it wasn’t long before Magneron was called into action when he cut out a dangerous cross from the right hand side.

D Thompson then combined well with Smith, who in turn released Nicholson through the middle, but he was well tackled inside the box with the ball going out for a corner.

The corner was well met by D Thompson but his low shot just went the wrong side of the post with the North Shields keeper well beaten.

The visitors carved out a good opportunity just before half-time with Magneron holding on to a fierce shot on the line. The first half drew to a close with a good effort from Strong, who met Milburn’s cross from the left to put his shot just wide of the far post.

The second half started in the same vein as the first with both defences on top and neither side being able to take full control of the game in the middle of the park.

As the half wore on, both sides started to lose some of their shape with more space opening up across the pitch.

Hill then released Milburn down the left and his clipped cross to the front post was met by Nicholson, but the North Shields keeper pulled off a superb save to keep the scores level.

North Shields almost broke the deadlock when Magneron made another good save in the Lions goal but with the rebound destined for the bottom corner Bowden was at hand to clear off the line.

Gascoigne entered the game to give the Lions some fresh legs in midfield and with the clock ticking down Smith released D Thompson, who broke clear of the tiring North Shields defence but his well-struck shot flew just wide of the post.

The final whistle brought to an end an entertaining game with the Lions extending their run of not conceding a goal to over 180 minutes with another good team performance.
