JOHN Carver has defended Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul – after he was pictured congratulating match-winner Jermain Defoe.

Sunderland striker Defoe’s stunning 45th-minute strike decided yesterday’s Wear-Tyne derby.

TV cameras showed Krul waiting for Defoe in the tunnel in the break.

And some fans were angered by Krul’s sporting gesture.

But head coach Carver said: “Tim Krul is the most passionate guy about this football club.

“He loves this club and he loves the fans, but sometimes when somebody produces a bit of brilliance fellow professionals appreciate it, and that’s maybe why that happened.”
