Morpeth Sunday League Round-up
THERE is only one place to start in Division One this week and that’s the eagerly anticipated clash between last season’s champions Amble Tavern and last season’s runners-up Pegswood.
It was Pegswood that triumphed in a great away victory, winning by four goals to nil thanks to an Ashley McAlpine hat-trick and a Wyn Fremlin effort. That’s two hat-tricks in consecutive weeks for McAlpine and he is undoubtedly a player other teams should be watching closely.
Closely following Pegswood are Stobswood who recorded their third win in a row with a convincing 6-1 victory over Village Inn Longframlington, unfortunately no goalscoring information was received from this match.
Red Row showed no signs of rustiness following their free week and made it two wins out of two by overcoming Amble Dock Hotel 7-2 thanks to braces from Kevin Bell and Aaron Carruthers, solitary strikes from Mark Mavin and Adam Shanks and an own goal. Amble Dock’s consolation goals were scored by Michael Straker and Dane Dawson.
Rounding off the results in Division One is Bedlington Barrington Arms recording a deserved 6-0 win over Morpeth Chantry.
After 25 minutes Chris Moffit capitalised on a poor throw out by the goalkeeper to his centre half and after exchanging passes with Dylan Williamson fired in a great effort from outside the box.
The lead was then doubled as Calum Donohoe fired in what looked like a cross from the left hand side which curled into the top corner and minutes later Donohoe got his second from the spot after a Chantry defender handled a Williamson shot on the line.
Rounding off the victory in the second half were goals by Williamson, Josh Laverick and man-of-the-match Chris Moffit who got his second with a great free-kick from 25 yards out.
In Division Two, Bomarsund maintained their perfect start, winning their third game in a row 5-2 against Blackthorn Rovers.
Despite the scoreline the match was relatively even and Blackthorn actually led the match 1-0 at half time.
However their inability to make the most of their chances would come back to haunt them and Bomarsund picked up the victory courtesy of a clinical hat-trick by Tony Messenger and a goal each from Craig Thompson and Kris Grey.
The Blackthorn goals came from David Heppell and Vitalik Bedakurau.
Hot on Bomarsund’s tails are East Chevington as they also made it three from three by defeating River Coquet 8-0 as Darren Smith went one better than last week with a hat-trick.
The remaining East Chevington goalscorers are as follows: David Shepherd (two) Gary Reid, Jordan Giles and Dean Towers.
In what surely had to be a decent game, Felton FC and North End Trap played out a 5-5 draw with two players grabbing hat-tricks. Tony Brown notched three for Felton, with Michael Old and James Jackson grabbing the other two, and for North End Trap it was Jack Godfrey who did the damage with three goals – the other two came from Stuart Oman.
Finally in Division Two, Riverside Lodge overcame Alnmouth Argyle 4-2 courtesy of a Darren Percy brace and a goal each from David Kewn and Scott Hume. Steven Hogg netted twice for the Argyle.
