Pont lose after injury-time drama

Ponteland United 3 Newcastle Chemfica 4 Northern Alliance, Division One

WITH all three registered keepers unavailable for this mid-table match with Newcastle Chemfica, United manager Michael Havelock had to play in goal on Saturday.

The former United keeper, who had not donned the gloves for three seasons, looked as if he had not been away with two excellent saves in the first ten minutes.

But he could not keep out a Davidson header from a free-kick. Five minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead through Homins.

Ponteland then hit back when United’s Davidson’s free-kick shot through the wall took a slight deflection before nestling in the net and when Scott headed the ball back to Anderson, he neatly flicked the ball just over the line for the equaliser.

A McLaughlin penalty made it 2-3, with Paul Jones sent off for Pont in a case of mistaken identity.

Although United made it 3-3 in stoppage time when Holden got beyond the defence to shoot past the keeper, they were defeated when Chemfica went up the other end and scored with a Collins strike.
