Morpeth Town 2 Newcastle Benfield 2 Northern League, Division One

At a sun-drenched Craik Park, Morpeth produced an excellent start to their first league game of the season to take a 2-0 lead.

But it was much tougher in the second half and in the end, they had to settle for a point.

The Highway Men were first out of the traps. On five minutes, Shaun Henderson broke down the wing and his ball inside was met firmly by Jordan Fry. Grainger in the Benfield goal could only parry the ball into the path of Morpeth captain Sean Taylor, who scored with ease.

Town’s short passing game continued to stretch Benfield and they were rewarded in the last minute of the half when Fry was impeded in the box. Michael Chilton stepped up to score the penalty.

On the hour, Errington was sent off for Benfield, but soon afterwards Morpeth’s Michael Hall received a red card – both for second bookings. The visitors responded better to this and made it 2-1 when substitute Day played the ball into Brayson, who scored from close range. Day then netted the equaliser when he connected with Convert’s free kick.
