A TEACHER and coach who was based at Morpeth’s high school for six years has netted a major national role.

Andy Blight of the Northumberland County Schools’ FA has been appointed Assistant Manager of the English Schools’ FA international squad for 2012/13.

He will replace Andy Buckingham, who will become Team Manager on the retirement of current manager Andy Williams.

Mr Blight led activities for the Morpeth School Sport Partnership from his base at King Edward VI School until last summer, when the Government controversially axed the partnerships as it went with a new approach on a reduced budget (schools get money directly to give PE teachers time to try to encourage students to play competitive sport and set up events).

The UEFA A Licence coach, who is now Director of Sport at the Northumberland Church of England Academy, has been an integral team member of the ESFA Summer Courses for the last six years.

As well as being successful with Northumberland County Schools’ FA squads, he has worked with Newcastle United FC, Middlesbrough FC and Carlisle United FC.
