Morpeth Town 2 Durham City 1 Ebac Northern League, Division One
THE Highway Men returned to winning ways at a storm-lashed Craik Park on Saturday, when a brace from Chilton defeated ninth-placed Durham City.
The visitors almost took the lead on 15 minutes when Hotchkiss saw his 25-yard free-kick cannon back off the post to safety.
Morpeth took the lead five minutes later.
Forster drove down the right-wing, cut inside and laid the ball back to the predatory Chilton, who swept the ball home from 12 yards (1-0).
In the final minute of the half, Fry almost doubled the lead but his firm header from a Forster corner crashed back into play off the under-side of the crossbar.
Durham City regained parity on the hour.
Fenwick ran onto a long through-ball to score from the edge of the box (1-1).
Five minutes later, Mundy was the Highway Men’s saviour, flinging himself to the right to parry a fierce Gray half-volley.
With their opponents starting to tire, Morpeth took control of the game in midfield.
On 70 minutes, a pinpoint cross was met by Chilton who headed home (2-1).
Morpeth continued to dominate with Taylor being denied twice in the final minutes, first by Winter who made a smart safe and then a desperate goal-line clearance by Harrison.
This excellent victory against a strong Durham City side sets the Highway Men up for the trip to Bishop Auckland on Friday night, kick-off 7.30pm.
