Penrith 3 Morpeth Town 4 Ebac Northern League, Division One

Through to the third round of the FA Carlsberg Vase after their 6-1 demolition of Cleethorpes Town and buoyed by a fine 4-1 midweek victory at Hebburn Town, the Highway Men traveled to Cumbria looking to win a third game in a week on Saturday.

And Morpeth Town made a dream start, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes.

After 11 minutes, Michael Chilton made no mistake when one-on-one with goalkeeper Johnny Jamieson and soon afterwards, the Penrith defence was culpable, allowing Steven Anderson to make it two.

Morpeth dominated the first half, but Penrith hit back strongly after the break.

Martin Coleman reduced the deficit with a fierce shot and Phil Storey headed in the equaliser.

An end-to-end contest had now developed and it was Morpeth who scored next with Shaun Taylor delivering a tremendous free-kick from 30 yards.

Taylor then made it 4-2 with an excellent cross-shot.

There was still time for Steven Rigg to throw the Cumbrians a lifeline – but Morpeth held on for three crucial points.

Morpeth Town: Mundy, Henderson, Lancaster, Keenan, Hall, Jewels, Taylor (Swanston), Bell, Anderson, Chilton (Fenwick), Forster (Fry).

Techflow Group Qatar man-of-the-match: Steven Anderson.

Morpeth’s next match is at home in the Ebac Northern League Division One tomorrow (Saturday) against Newton Aycliffe. Kick-off 3pm.
