Town notch up six of the best

Morpeth Town 6 Washington 1 EBAC Northern League Division Two

UNBEATEN in the nine games in the league, Morpeth entertained mid-table Washington on Saturday.

As events unfolded on the pitch, the hard work put in by the ground staff to get the game on was certainly rewarded.

Full of confidence, the Highway Men took the game to the visitors from the first whistle and provided the crowd with a display of scintillating attacking football.

In the first half, Fry, twice, and Walmsley were denied by the frame of the goal, but the goals flowed.

Dines capitalised on a flick on by Dunn to power a header into the net to make it 1-0.

McAlpine doubled the lead. Bursting through the Washington defence, he collect a pin-point through-ball from Grant and was then impeded in the penalty area.

His penalty was dispatched with aplomb into the top of the net.

Fry made the half-time score 3-0 when his rose at the far post to guide home a pin-point cross from Dunn.

The Highway Men continued the second half in similar vein.

Grant released Lunn on the hour and he outpaced the tiring Washington defence to fire home from the edge of the box to make it 4-0.

In a rare foray forward, Washington scored a consolation when Mundy was wrong-footed by a deflection.

Morpeth continued on the attack and substitute Anderson burst forward, held off a challenge and drove home from an acute angle to make it 5-1.

Stretched at the back, Washington conceded the final goal of the game when overlapping full-back Wilson connected with an Anderson cross to smash a volley into the top of the net to make it 6-1.

This was an excellent team performance from Morpeth who have now moved up to fifth in the table with games in hand on all those above them.
