Morpeth Town 2 Thornaby 1 Northern League Division Two

MORPETH kept their chances of getting the final promotion spot alive with a home victory on Monday night.

Included in the Highway Men’s starting line-up were long-term absentee McAlpine and Damen Mullen, a recent signing from Blyth Spartans.

The hosts started to build some pressure after a cagey opening, but they were caught out on 15 minutes. A Thornaby corner was half-cleared and the ball fell to Blyth, whose deflected shot found the bottom left-hand corner.

Despite this setback, Town started to get their passing game going and parity was restored on the half-hour. Dines and Anderson linked up to release Keenan and he was able to fire home from the edge of the box to equalise.

Ten minutes into the second half, Anderson found space on the left and intelligently lifted the ball into the box, where Chilton with his back to goal turned his marker and scored from ten yards.

There were no further goals, but this was a very welcome three points, particularly after the 0-0 draw at home to Birtley Town on Saturday.

Morpeth face Tow Law Town at Craik Park on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.
