Town to stay in the top division

Morpeth Town 1 Newcastle Benfield 1 Northern League, Division One

The Highway Men secured their first division status next season with a four-point haul.

In the first half against Newcastle Benfield on Saturday, the Morpeth backline, expertly marshalled by man-of-the-match Buchanan, held their opponents at bay.

The clearest chance of a combative 45 minutes fell to wide man Forster, but his angled drive was well saved by Grainger in the Benfield goal.

A minute after the restart, the home side took the lead. Chilton was played in down the left and his low cross was turned into the net by the on-rushing Anderson (1-0).

With the clock running down, the visitors committed players forward. Morpeth keeper Mundy saved from Airey, but Baptist was able to capitalise to drill the ball across Mundy to equalise (1-1).

Airey almost snatched victory at the death, but his was again denied by Mundy.

On Tuesday night, Town beat West Auckland 3-1 with two strikes from Anderson and a Forster goal direct from a corner.
