Morpeth Town 6 Liversedge 0 FA Cup with Budweiser Extra Preliminary Round

ON the back of two disappointing defeats in their first league matches, Morpeth took the field determined to kick-start their season with a cup victory.

Dominant from the start, the Highway Men found Liversedge goalkeeper Abbott in inspired form as he did well to deny Chilton, Anderson and Taylor the opening goal that the home side’s skilful approach play deserved.

With only 10 seconds of the half remaining, Taylor sped onto a Chilton flick to calmly stoke the ball past Abbott to make it 1-0.

From the restart, Chilton immediately doubled Morpeth’s advantage. With Bell and Grant controlling the midfield, Keenan and Taylor continued to apply the pressure to the visiting defence.

Chilton linked up with Swanston to finish off a fine move for his second. Taylor was again denied by Abbott, but was first to react to chip home to make it 4-0.

In the final 10 minutes, a rampant Town scored a further two goals.

Fry found the back of the net and Chilton then completed his hat-trick

This was a great display of attacking football by the Highway Men. In the next round they will travel to Durham City on Saturday, August 31.

Morpeth Town: Rookes, Wilson (Fry), Robinson, Grant (Hutchinson), Hall, Jewels, Bell, Keenan, Anderson (Swanston), Chilton, Taylor. techflow Group Qatar man-of-the-match: Sean Taylor.

Last midweek, Morpeth found the going tough at home to Penrith. Coleman scored twice to put the away side 2-0 up after 20 minutes.

Rice headed home from a free-kick and Coleman netted his hat-trick to open up a four-goal margin just after half-time.

A headed goal by Rigg further extended Penrith’s lead, then with a couple of minutes to go, Town got a consolation when Hall headed in Taylor’s free-kick.

The visitors had the final word, however, as Coleman got his fourth from close range in injury time to make the final score 1-6.

Morpeth are at home to Billingham Synthonia on Saturday. Kick-off at Craik Park is 3pm.
