Wallington 3 Shankhouse 1 Northern Alliance, Premier Division
WALLINGTON executed their version of smash and grab to perfection on Saturday, writes Kyle Reardon.
Out-played and out-run for well over an hour, The Green berets of Scots Gap mounted a late retaliation that saw them deal three lethal blows in the final 15 minutes to Shankhouse.
After Alex Slack had to make a captain’s clearance off the goal-line and Matty Lees made some useful saves, a long throw and smart finish eventually caved in the Wallington resistance (0-1).
The second half started slightly better, but the visitors were still the dominant team and they wasted a number of set-pieces, which would ultimately prove costly.
The hosts brought on Ben Fenwick and Ben Turnbull and they injected some much-needed energy and a tactical reshuffle saw them gain some momentum.
With confidence restored, Wallington looked dangerous in attack and they equalised when Jordan Nellis turned and slipped through John Paxton, who composed himself before slotting home (1-1).
Within five minutes, the game’s remarkable turnaround was enhanced when young Turnbull found Slack on the left-flank.
His pin-point cross was attacked bravely by Nellis.
He was rewarded when he picked himself up to see strike partner Paxton celebrating after he had thumped home the loose ball from six yards out (2-1).
Nellis then made the final score 3-1 with a confident finish following a mazy run from Paxton.
