Win keeps up promotion pressure

Division Two

On the back of two wins in a week, the Highway Men took the field at Chester Moor last week
looking for a further three points to maintain the pressure on the teams currently in promotion places, writes David McMeekan.

In a half of few chances, with both defences dominant, neither keeper had a save of any note to make until the final minute of the half when an Anderson cross was punched clear by Crook in the Chester goal.

As Dines was in the process of bringing the ball down, his was scythed to the ground by a reckless challenge.

Chilton dispatched the resulting penalty into the bottom corner of the net to give Morpeth the lead at half-time.

With Dines, Fry and Grant dominant in midfield, the Highway Men took the game to their opponents and scored a deserved second goal with 15 minutes remaining.

Dines received the ball wide on the right wing, he cut inside going past two men with ease and as he entered the penalty area he was up ended and the Highway Men were awarded their second penalty of the game.

Anderson stepped up to fire a firm right-footed shot past the despairing dive of Crook to double the Highway Men’s lead.

Having won three games on the bounce, Morpeth now have the league leaders firmly in their sights.

With only two months of the season remaining, games are coming thick and fast, and the Highway Men are showing the sort of form that should move them up into a promotion spot come May.

Rusty’s Taxis man-of-the-match: Eddie Dines.
