Ponteland 27 Novocastrians 22 Durham and Northumberland, Division One
PONTELAND produced a stirring finish to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday.
Several strong runs from the visitors’ big midfield players saw them take the lead with an unconverted try after six minutes (0-5).
Pont’s forwards were making yards at every scrum and the line-out drive was proving to be a potent weapon. It was from such a drive on 30 minutes that Robinson was able to dive over for a score, with Mullins converting (7-5).
Immediately from the kick off, Novos attacked and an overthrow at a Pont line-out saw them take the lead from a penalty (7-8).
But continued pressure from the home side gave Ponteland a five-point half-time lead thanks to two penalties from Mullins (13-8).
Pont dominated from the kick-off as several more chances went begging. A yellow card to Novos for persistent infringement should have opened the floodgates, but wasted opportunities and dogged defending saw the away side hang on and they then took advantage by scoring two unconverted tries (13-22).
As the home crowd were ruing the many missed chances, their side got a lucky break as a kick through bounced away from the defender and skipper Moller dived on it, with Mullins converting to reduce the gap to two points (20-22).
In the final minute, Ponteland achieved a crucial strike against the head and good work by Robinson and Moller gave Newbigin some space and he scored under the posts.
Mullins added the conversion to make the final score 27-22.
