A WIDDRINGTON Village girl was more excited than most to see the snow falling over the last two weeks.

Fields covered in white gave Amy Stokoe the chance to practice her ski skills and she has been to the old pit heap in Pegswood and a farmer’s field in Wooler, as well as the Weardale hills, with father David.

She has already made her mark on the sport by winning the Rossendale Under 8 Ski League last autumn. She had the best score after four slalom events – one held each month.

The seven-year-old regularly trains at the Silksworth Dry Ski Slope in Sunderland with the Thursday evening Tigers group – she was previously a member of the Polar Bears junior academy on a Saturday morning.

She has also been hurtling down the slopes at ski schools in France during family holidays.

Her proud mother, Helen Maltby, said: “We first took her to the dry slope at Silksworth at the age of four before going on a ski holiday to get her used to wearing the gear and using the equipment. She really enjoyed the holiday and since then her passion for the sport kept on growing.

“Amy loves the speed element of skiing and the independence it gives her as she is in control of how she goes down the slopes.

“She also likes the social side of it – even though the children at the Tigers group are a mix of ages they all get on really well because they have a common interest.

“We were concerned that going down to Sunderland on Thursday nights may affect her at school (Longhorsley St Helen’s) the following day, but the teachers said they have no problems with her so she attends the Tigers most weeks.

“At Rossendale, everyone was mixed together and the age group results were determined on overall times.

“It also meant that as there was enough room for two people to ski down the slope at the same time, she was racing against adults because her times were so quick.

“In France she has been on some courses that have terrified me when I’ve been on them, but she is totally fearless.”
