High numbers get half-marathon off to a flying start

SUNDAY’S Run Northumberland Wallington Half Marathon was hailed a success after a big increase in entry numbers.

A total of 681 runners took part, up from 390 last year, shattering the already high expectations for the picturesque race. Michael Morris of Morpeth Harriers won the men’s race in a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 29 seconds. The women’s race was won by Fiona Taylor, an unattached runner from St Andrews in Scotland, in one hour, 34 minutes and 54 seconds.

The club and amateur athletes, aged between 18 and 75, were mainly from the North East but some came from other parts of the country and even as far afield as the USA and Australia to pound the roads around Cambo and Scots Gap in the glorious early spring sunshine.

The turnout puts organiser Team Decathlon right on track to reach its target of 2012 competitors for 2012 over all five Run Northumberland races taking place between now and mid-October.

Race Director Richard Hunter said: “To have 681 runners in this year’s Wallington Half Marathon was phenomenal.

“The event is shaping up to be a major player on the annual regional sporting calendar. The course is excellent and there are sensational views along the way.”
