A NEW sporting initiative is aiming to build on the enthusiasm of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and support a lasting legacy for people in Northumberland.

The Sports Challenge Fund, developed by the county council and Northumberland Sport, will offer grants of up to £3,000 to National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) to encourage projects and activities that will help them with the delivery of their national programmes in the county.

It is aimed at young people aged between 14 and 25 years. Ultimately, it is designed to raise sporting participation levels.

Neil Bradbury, executive member responsible for leisure at Northumberland County Council, said: “The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were truly phenomenal events and Team GB athletes were an inspiration for people in this country through the many unbelievable performances they gave and the outstanding medal hauls achieved.

“Through the Sports Challenge Fund, we want to ensure that the Games don’t become a distant memory and by supporting and working directly with NGBs we believe we can create more opportunities for our residents to participate in sport.

“We would therefore welcome any bids from NGBs that can clearly demonstrate an impact on participation levels. This could range from supporting the employment of more coaches, helping to develop local sports clubs or any other innovative project ideas they may have.

“I’d be particularly pleased to support sports where participation in the county is lower than the national average and to help them develop in Northumberland.”
