Highway Men held up

Morpeth Town 3 Ryhope CW 4 Ebac Northern League Division Two

From the first minute, the Highway Men took the game to league leaders Ryhope CW making progress on both wings and dominating the midfield, Morpeth took a deserved lead on 15 minutes with a excellent strike by Anderson from the edge of the box, writes David McMeekan.

At this stage Morpeth were in total control of the game stretching their opponents as they strived for a second goal.

On 35 minutes, in a rare foray forward, the ball was played into the home penalty area, the covering Hiftle slid in to clear the ball but was adjudged to have committed a foul and a penalty was awarded, converted and Ryhope regained parity.

Morpeth continued to press forward but were undone by two slick break away goals in the final minutes of the half.

Three-one down at half-time the Highway Men continued in a similar vein as the first half pressing forward, but were again caught on the break.

Butter and Winn Ryhope have a potent forward line and a brace from each in this game took their combined total in the league this season to 50 goals.

As the game entered its final half hour the Highway Men showed their metal as they continued to take the game to their opponents.

Dines was denied by a hand-ball in the final minute and Anderson stroked home the penalty to make the score 4-2 to Ryhope.

Deep into injury time after a succession of corners Anderson drove home from an acute angle to complete his hat-trick.

Ryhope travelled home with a fortuitous three points as the Highway Men lost for the first time in the league this season.

Morpeth Town: Mundy, Henderson, Walmsley, Grant, Hiftle (Scott), Dunn, Dines, Keenan (Wilson), Anderson, Lunn, (McAlpine) Hall. Rusty’s Taxis man-of-the-match: Steven Anderson.

The next match at Craik Park is the Northumberland Senior Cup quarter-final against Ashington, kick-off 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 21.
