Last gasp equaliser

Whitley Lodge Baptist Church 4 Morpeth Baptist Church 4 North East Christian Fellowship Premier Division

AFTER securing a crucial 5-0 win against the bottom team in the division in their last home match of the season just three days earlier MBC faced a more daunting trip to free-scoring, top-of-the-table, Whitley Lodge for their final game.

After an entertaining match they came away with what could prove to be a crucial point, secured with a last minute equaliser.

The game began with Whitley Lodge playing with a strong wind behind them. There were chances at both ends but it was Morpeth Baptist Church who took the lead from a Johnson header at the back post after a searching free-kick from T Lavender from the right wing.

It was the home team who took the initiative after that though with an equaliser from a corner, nodded in at the back post. Then a fine effort from the number nine made it 2-1.

A miscued clearance from keeper Appleby fell to the home forward who made it 3-1 just before half-time.

Morpeth Baptist Church were sent out for the second half with instruction from coach Curry to continue their positive and determined play.

Soon after the restart though the dangerous number nine, who was just onside, cut into the box and curled in another neat finish to the bottom corner of the net.

Haxell (Jnr) had come on for the second half and battled well on the right wing, winning a few crucial free-kicks and linking up well with some neat passing moves.

Packer got the goal his play had deserved with a neat finish and the come-back was on. Haxell then cut a ball back from the by-line and Packer was there to tuck it in from a tight angle.

It looked like Morpeth Baptist Church’s chance might be over but in the last minute of play a long throw from T Lavender on the left was headed on at the near post and Elliott was on hand to head in the equaliser from close range.

Team: D Appleby, A Elliott, B Dewhirst, D Johnson, T Lavender, B Lavender (D Haxell), R Garbutt, C Curry, C Snowball (D Michie), L Tanney, J Packer. Unused sub: A Haxell.
