Point secures third place

Burradon U17s 0 Morpeth Sporting Club U17s 0

MORPETH went into their last game of the season needing at least one point to ensure that they would finish third in the league.

On a hard pitch and in windy conditions, the game was a general disappointment but Morpeth came away with the point that gave them a very creditable league place after a hard season.

There was little flowing football in the first half but the away team had the better of the chances. In particular, Jack Travers went close with a good shot and then even closer when his clever lob beat the goalkeeper but hit the bar. Burradon had a couple of chances of their own but were unable to break the deadlock.

The second half was similar to the first but Burradon had more possession. That said, Morpeth created two good opportunities and James Brown almost scored after a good run and shot which went just wide.

The moment of the match came with about 10 minutes left. A cross from the left looped into the air and fell kindly for one of the Burradon forwards to head the ball towards the goal.

Just as it appeared that the ball was going high into the net, Dan Carr made a magnificent save and somehow managed to push the ball over the bar. It was an incredible effort and drew instant applause from all those who were watching.

That proved to be the highlight and the game degenerated into a scrappy and ill-tempered last few minutes. That was a shame for those whose involvement with the team ended after the match.

However, they leave a team that has developed significantly over the years, still comprising local players but now finishing the season towards the top of the league rather than the bottom.

Squad: Carr, Chambers, Vescio, Laux, Tordoff, Biggs, Wilson, Robertson, Brown, Tully, Travers, Hunter, Philips, Nelson.
