Third time lucky for SC

Morpeth SC Madrid U14 4 Whitley Bay Boys Club U14 1

MORPETH entertained the only team to have beaten them twice this season.

With Morpeth on a fine run of form recently, the game was evenly balanced.

Madrid started the brighter, Clapperton and Robertson linking well to free Smith but the keeper was quick off his line to remove the danger.

Morpeth though were not to be denied an early goal and Hodge slipped the ball through to Smith for a great strike into the far corner, 1-0.

Whitley Bay responded but the Morpeth defence of Campbell, Gascoigne, Riley and Thompson were continuing their fine form, having only conceded once in the last five games.

Morpeth created several good chances to increase the lead with Wilson, Barry and Smith all having efforts saved.

Brown, in goal, had an easy first period clearing any balls which passed between the Madrid centre-backs.

The second half saw Whitley Bay take the ascendancy, testing Brown from distance before equalising with a shot which squeezed between a wall of players into the corner beyond Brown.

Morpeth started to struggle. Gascoigne picked up a knock and for a while Madrid looked vulnerable. However, this side are playing with a determination and began to play some great football.

Barry was put through by Tachiguchi only to see his dipping chip fall the wrong side of the post. Madrid restored their advantage when a good ball from Barry saw Wilson round the keeper to slot home from a tight angle. Smith then picked up a Thompson clearance and used his pace to defeat the defence before putting past the keeper. Riley then repeated the move with Barry this time running clear to score. Whitley Bay had conceded defeat at this stage and were kept to their own half for the remaining few minutes.

Madrid go to their fourth inter club derby this Sunday with a 2-1 game advantage on their rivals, but with the knowledge there can be no room for errors or complacency in what are usually close competitive games.

Squad: Brown, Campbell, Gascoigne, Riley, Thompson, Robertson, Wilson, Clapperton, Hodge, Smith, Barry, Tachiguchi.
