Last-gasp comeback

Leeds Adel Carnegie 2 Morpeth Ladies First XI 3

MORPETH travelled to Leeds keen to restart their season after a five-week break.

However, it transpired that the opposition were keen to do the same.

In blustery conditions, the game kicked off with the visitors hoping to assert themselves from the off. But on a bouncy pitch and with a couple of regulars missing and another one or two players out of position, it proved hard for Morpeth. Perhaps not surprisingly then, Leeds took the lead from a fast break through a long ball (1-0).

Having seen the profits of this approach, Adel continued to deploy the long ball and but for the interventions of Cully, Bryson and Hindmarch, their advantage could have been increased.

Morpeth came out in the second half determined to raise their game. But despite one or two promising moves, no clear-cut chances were created. In the end, it was the home side that increased their lead (2-0).

With 12 minutes to go, Cully found Hagan on the edge of the circle, she turned well and beat her defender before sending a crisp shot to the back post. The reassuring sound of the backboard gave Morpeth hope of a rousing finish to the game if nothing else (2-1).

Within seconds, they were back on the attack and after long corner, a sweet move down the right involving Hindmarch, Bowler and Pollock, saw the ball fall into the path of O’Mahony, and despite the tight angle she calmly slotted the ball home past the flailing keeper (2-2).

And would you believe it, with the very next attack, Morpeth won a short-corner. With the adrenalin pumping, the ball was fired to Hagan at the top of the circle. This time there was no prevaricating and she coolly drilled the ball into the keeper’s bottom right hand corner (2-3).

Team: Janice Rose; Karen Hindmarch; Sally Bryson; Teleri Wilson; Emma Bell; Nicky Bowler (c); Brooke Cully; Lindsay Pollock; Dani Hagan; Arran O’Mahony; Leoli Telford-Cooke; Carrie MacDonald. Man-of-the-match: Brooke Cully.
