A MORPETH man has been appointed by the Irish Ladies Fly-fishing Association (ILFA) as the Official Coach and Fly-Tyer to their 2012 team that will fish the Ladies International Fly-fishing Championships on the Lake of Menteith in Scotland, in May 2012.

Brian Kerr, who is a former junior champion sea angler and lifelong fly-fisherman, left Morpeth to move to Armagh in Northern Ireland four years ago where he now lives with his partner, the Irish fly-fishing International Linda Straghan and their 18-month-old son, Sonny.

Shortly after moving to Armagh his potential was noticed by one of the top fly-fishing teams in Northern Ireland - the ‘Team Woodford Grey’s Ireland’ based in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, and he was recruited onto that team.

Since then he has built a reputation as a very consistent competition angler with many wins under his belt, including ‘Woodford Winter League Champion 2011’, and more recently he was crowned the ‘2012 Ulster Rivers Champion’. He has also qualified for the Ulster Province’s ‘Bank International Team’ and the ‘Ulster Senior Lough Style Team’.

Brian, who grew up fishing the Rivers Wansbeck and Coquet, left school at 16 to start work for lifelong angler and highly respected fly-dresser, Ken Middlemist of Hipsburn, who was a former employee of the famous House of Hardy.

Brian considers himself extremely privileged to have been taught to tie flies on a daily basis by such a talented craftsman. Brian, now a well-respected fly-dresser in his own right, has supplied flies to top anglers all over the country and hopes to share this experience, as well as the knowledge he has gained through competition angling with the members of the Irish ladies team.

He will be loudly cheered on by his young son Sonny who has been adopted as the Irish Team Mascot.
