THE Morpeth Point-to-Point event once again attracted a good crowd and featured some top class racing.

The runners and riders at the Tranwell course were full of quality and some very exciting finishes helped to create a superb atmosphere among those attending the meeting.

In particular, the Members Race had only a few lengths separating all five starters at the finishing line. The eventual victor was Val Jackson, who took her career tally to 90 winners including 24 under rules, on Cast Iron Casey.

Her mount still had a bit to do when in third place approaching the last, but it finished like a train to snatch a short head verdict from Newyearsresolution and Amie Waugh, with Reef Dancer ridden by Toby Speke a neck away in third.

Fourth home was Drew Holmes on Silent Cliche and Steffi Dunn riding Grande Monsieur, who was having her first point-to-point ride, finished a very creditable fifth.

The Alan Balmer Memorial Trophy for the leading jockey at the meeting was presented to Chris Dawson, who had three seconds on the day.

The Pony Race ended an entertaining afternoon’s racing with Harry Reed (15) taking the honours riding Honkytonk Girl. Harry will no doubt be joining the point-to-point jockeys next season when he turns 16.

Second was Abigail Charleton (15), a member of the Morpeth Pony Club, riding Craiglea Smarty and in third place was George Crawford (13) on Hepplewood Berkley Square.
