Run for fun and charity
MORPETH residents are invited to get fit while raising money for charity by taking part in the first St Oswald’s Run for Fun.
The 5km multi-lap event, which takes place in the market town on Sunday, March 31, will be one of a series of events for families and children during the weekend leading up to the World Duathlon Championship qualifier in Morpeth on April 1.
Runners will be treated to some of the North East’s most beautiful scenery on the route, including a scenic path along the river and a section through Carlisle Park.
Organiser Neil Jefferson, from VO2Max Racing Events Ltd, said: “There has been a huge upsurge of interest from both spectators and competitors in this sport, so we are hoping to encourage people of all abilities to get involved in the weekend’s events.
“St Oswald’s Run for Fun is an ideal starter event as people can run or walk, it doesn’t matter, the main thing is that they take part and enjoy themselves.
“Morpeth Town Team has been very supportive and we are incredibly excited about running this event in and around Morpeth town centre. We are hoping to have crowds of spectators lining the streets and Carlisle Park to cheer on the competitors.
“We are delighted to be staging the fun run event in association with St Oswald’s Hospice and are hoping that people will offer their support to an organisation that provides so much help to adults and young people in the local area.”
All runners must be 15 years of age or over on the day of the race. Entry costs from £6 and includes a £1 donation to the charity.
There will also be a variety of events throughout the day for those cheering on the runners, including activities for children of all ages.
St Oswald’s Hospice provides specialist care for North East adults, young people and children with life-limiting conditions.
One of its fund-raisers, Emma Noble, said: “We’re all really excited about the first ever St Oswald’s Run for Fun. It’s in a great location and it’s an achievable length for beginners and seasoned runners alike, so anyone can get involved.
“Supporters can get fit while helping us to continue providing care for North East families at a time when they need it most.
“The support we receive from events like this is simply our lifeline and we are extremely thankful for it. No doubt there will be lots of St Oswald’s supporters getting their running shoes on for this one.”
