A Year 12 student at Ponteland High School has been successfully competing in the Sunderland Karate Championships 2015 as a member of the Northumberland Karate Academy.

Theo Fisher took first place in the individual 15-17 male kumite.

He also finished second in the adult team kumite.

The competition included entrants from Leeds, York, Newcastle, Northumberland and Sunderland.

Theo managed to beat three members of the KUGB England squad on his way to the individual award.

All of this has been achieved at the same time as Theo was negotiating his AS exams at school.

Ponteland High Headteacher Kieran McGrane said: “Theo is a brilliant example of what young people can achieve when they have real drive and determination.

“He is a fantastic student athlete and we are very pleased that he is a key member of our school community.”
