MORPETH golfer Garrick Porteous took on the best amateur players in the USA at the weekend as part of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team.
He got off to a good start at the biennial event in Southampton, New York. He and foursomes partner Rhys Pugh beat Michael Weaver and Todd White 3&1 as the GB&I team took an early lead.
But it got tougher from there as the USA won most of the singles matches on the Saturday to go 8-4 ahead. Porteous gave a good account of himself, however he lost by one hole to Jordan Niebrugge.
On Sunday, the 23-year-old and Pugh were beaten by one hole by Michael Kim and Max Homa. He then lost 4&2 to Kim in the final round of singles.
The USA won the match 17-9.
The English amateur champion will play in a few more tournaments before the end of the year.
