IT was medal success at the double for a Morpeth athlete at the England Athletics National, Area & Parallel Success Championship held in Birmingham.
Nisha Desai was also competing in the North of England Senior Championships at the event in the Alexander Stadium due to the congested fixture calendar caused by the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The 400m hurdler grew up in the town and represented Morpeth Harriers before moving to Manchester. She now runs for Trafford Athletics Club.
She ran a controlled race to finished second in her qualifying heats with a time of 60.95 secs, which was slower than the PB of 58.79secs that she set the weekend before in Cardiff to climb to 7th overall in the UK rankings for the Senior Women’s 400m hurdles.
The following day, in absolute wintry conditions with rain and wind making the track almost unsuitable for fast times, it was a matter of tactical final. Nisha came out determined to prove her critics wrong by running a very determined gutsy race and she crossed the finish line in third overall and first from the north region in a time of 59.64secs.
This meant she had won her sixth consecutive Northern Athletics gold medal as well as her third successive England Athletics National medal.
She is looking forward to competing in the UK Championships and Olympic Trials event at the same venue this weekend.
Nisha’s achievements are all the more impressive considering that she holds a very demanding full-time role in NHS hospitals as a pharmacist and then has to train very hard to be able to perform well against some of the top full-time athletes who receive considerable support from the UKA/EA and other areas. She would welcome sponsorship to help her achieve her ambitions, so anyone who would like to help can contact her via the following email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
